LI Lightning Groups - MTG - 0 degreeLI Level 2 Lightning Groups (LGR) contains LI groups. These are closely related to
other similar space-born instruments. The definition of a group is shared by LI, GLM
and ISS-LIS groups: collections of pixel-based lightning events that are acquired
within the same acquisition frame and are spatially clustered. LI groups provide users
with information about the time-slicing imaging (over the LI acquisition time, ie
one millisecond) of lightning optical emissions. When comparing LI groups with either
GLM or ISS-LIS groups, users must consider the differences in design between instruments,
such as integration time and spatial sampling/resolution. Both GLM and ISS-LIS acquire
over two milliseconds. When observing the same storm, this difference in design can
potentially create considerable differences in the total number of groups, as well
as differences between the acquisition times of the groups. In addition, differences
will be found also for the geolocation of groups. In general, the discrepancies mentioned
above are expected to be of the order of a few milliseconds for the group time and
of the order of a few kilometres for the group geolocation.
