IRS Level 1 reduced sub-set of 300 Principal Components - MTG

This dataset contains the MTG IRS-based Level 1 spectral radiances represented in compressed form as the 300 leading Principal Components (PC). These are calculated from the original spectral sounding samples (SSS) making use of the high degree of correlation between the spectral channels. This correlation means the number of independent pieces of information within the 1953 (LWIR: 876, MWIR 1076) spectral channels of IRS is much smaller than the total number of samples. For any given dimension, the optimal subspace (in the sense of minimising the average norm of the orthogonal complement) is spanned by the leading Principal Components [PCA], ie, the leading eigenvectors of the (noise normalised) covariance matrix of the data. Each radiance can, therefore, be compressed into principal components scores (PCS) with minimal loss of information (mostly noise). The original radiances can be reconstructed from the Principal Components using the eigenvector basis available as EO:EUM:DAT:XXX. Sampling the Earth disc is divided into four LACs (Local Area Coverage) regions, numbered 1 to 4 from South to North. LACn is encoded in the filename as ‘Qn’, ie, ‘Q4’ for ‘LAC4’ etc. LAC4 covering Europe is scanned every 30 minutes, and LACs 1, 2 and 3 are scanned in a different sequence.
