AVHRR Global (dual) Atmospheric Motion Vectors Climate Data Record Release 1 - Metop-A/B
and -B/ATropospheric winds derived globally using the tandem configuration of METOP-A and
METOP-B AVHRR instruments. Two complementary products are generated considering either
Metop-A or Metop-B as the reference platform.
This is the first release of the global atmospheric wind vectors data record. Data
are accessible from the EUMETSAT Data Centre. This uses the version 3.1.1 of the EUMETSAT
operational algorithm and forecast from ERA-Interim reanalyses as auxiliary data.
The data record includes products generated using IR images (channel 4) taken from
two AVHRR/3 imager on-board the Metop-A and Metop-B polar satellites. Each product
contains several wind vectors with their associated speed, direction, height, and
several quality indicators. The dataset covers the period from the 24 April 2013 until
December 2017.
The coverage is global. The dataset is available in two formats: the EUMETSAT EPS
native format and the BUFR format.
Atmospheric motion vectors (AMVs) are a valuable observation type for providing dynamical
information for forecast models.
This is a Thematic Climate Data Record (TCDR) produced for the Copernicus Climate
Change Service.
